The holidays are all about traditions. Consider adding “buy local” to your family’s list of Thanksgiving traditions this year. From turkeys and fresh vegetables to baked goods, beverages and more, you can get everything you need for the holidays while supporting businesses right here in Frederick County.
If you prepare a turkey for your Thanksgiving dinner, you can find locally raised, farm-fresh turkeys at a number of area farms:
- Good Hope Farmstead
- Hillside Turkey Farms
- Nicks Organic Farm
- Open Book Farm
- Rights of Man Farm
- South Mountain Creamery
- Sycamore Spring Farm
Frederick County leads the state in the number of turkey farms with an incredible 53 farms, bringing over 3 million dollars in sales to our farm community. Not only is buying local good for the farmer, it also is good for our environment. If every household in Maryland purchased just $12 worth of farm products for eight weeks, over $200 million would be put back into the pockets of our farmers.
And of course you can get more than just turkeys from local farms. Check out our Find Local Products Tool. Purchasing local agriculture products for your holiday meals helps to support our agriculture economy and keeps your money in the community. There are also a number of farmers markets throughout Frederick County with fresh produce, home-made desserts and other baked goods.
To round out your Thanksgiving meal, or as a great gift, consider purchasing locally-made wine, beer or spirits from one of Frederick County’s many craft beverage producers. Many of them are offering services such as delivery or curbside pickup.
We hope you have an enjoyable and safe Thanksgiving holiday. Once the turkey has been eaten and the fall decorations are put away, you might start thinking about a Christmas tree. If live trees are your thing, Frederick County certainly has you covered with several Christmas tree farms.
Happy Thanksgiving from the Frederick County Office of Economic Development!
